When you are not signed in

You can browse and play music without an account. Ratings and personal settings are not saved to your account. We may still use minimal browser storage (for example to remember that you dismissed the cookie notice).

When you sign in with Google

Signing in lets you save ratings, listen history, and sync settings (such as filters and theme) across devices. We store:

        • Your Google account email, display name, and profile picture
        • A unique user ID from Google Authentication
        • Your ratings, listens, and app preferences (filters and similar settings)
        • Comments you submit, together with their moderation status

We use this information only to provide those features. We do not sell your personal data.

        Where data is stored

When you are signed in, account and preference data are stored in Google Firebase (Authentication and Firestore). Firebase and your browser may also use cookies or local storage to keep you signed in.

A local copy of your library data is kept in your browser so Shelf can appear immediately. It is associated with your Firebase user ID, does not contain your email address or sign-in token, and is removed when you sign out.

        About

An independent project documenting trance’s classic era — and judging every track in it on its own merits.

        What Is Euphoria Music?

Euphoria Music is an independent project dedicated to exploring, preserving and redefining the music of trance’s classic era.

Its primary goal is to comprehensively document the music produced throughout trance’s formative years, examining the genre as a whole rather than through a limited selection of well-known classics. By going through as much of the music as possible, the project seeks to identify, preserve and properly present the greatest artistic achievements of this era — and ultimately bring them together in a definitive, carefully researched and merit-based ranking.

But Euphoria Music is about more than creating a Top list. It is also an attempt to understand what trance actually was: its artistic identity, its compositional philosophy, and the qualities that made the music capable of creating a sense of progression, immersion and euphoria. Despite the genre’s enormous cultural impact, there has been remarkably little effort over the past three and a half decades to define these qualities in a detailed and coherent way beyond the early Berliner Trance documentary. As the meaning of “trance” has gradually broadened, its original identity has become increasingly diluted, making it harder to distinguish the musical philosophy that gave the genre its name in the first place.

More than three decades ago, MFS founder Mark Reeder suggested that the music might have been better called euphoria than trance — a remark that captures an idea at the heart of this project. Euphoria Music therefore seeks not only to preserve the music itself, but to help restore a clearer understanding of what made it distinct: by examining the complete classic era, identifying its greatest works, and articulating the musical principles that connect them. In doing so, the project aims to give that original musical identity a clearer name and framework of its own: Euphoria.

        How the catalog is built

Euphoria Music does not start from a ready-made list of classics. It works back from the whole field: the music released across trance’s formative years, drawn from a pool of roughly 174,000 tracks that the project tracks year by year.

Each of those tracks is listened to in full and judged on its own merits — its ideas, its construction, the effect it has on the listener. Only the ones that clear the project’s inclusion bar are carried into the catalogue; the rest are left out, however well known they may be. Nothing is here because of its reputation alone.

That is why the catalog stays small. 310 tracks have been selected from the 21,077 checked so far — about 1.5%. The figure is deliberately unfinished: the earliest years are complete, the later ones are still being worked through, and the selection grows as the archive does.

        How tracks are rated

Every track in the catalogue carries a set of ratings. The headline figure is the Weighted Rating — a single 0–100 score that blends two kinds of input: the project’s own editorial judgment and the standing a release has built up with listeners.

        Curator Rating
The project’s own verdict on the track, out of five.
        Tier Rating
A letter grade from C− to A+, describing how close the track comes to the ideal the project is looking for.
        YouTube Rating
How the track has been received by listeners on YouTube.
        Discogs Rating
The release’s standing in the Discogs community of collectors.
        Impact Rating
How much the track mattered to the genre and to the people who heard it.

The Weighted Rating is then read back through five named tiers. They are a way of describing a score in words rather than a separate judgment of their own — and they are the same tiers you can filter by in the catalogue.

        Support the project

Euphoria Music is made independently, with no label, sponsor or advertising behind it. Every track in the archive is listened to in full, and working through the rest of the era is a task measured in years.

If the project means something to you, you can help keep it going on Ko-fi.
